Process optimisation in the Kerschgens Group

With a modernisation project spanning over several years, the Kerschgens Group are currently optimising their internal processes in the steel trade. In addition to their processing capacity, the full-range stockist wants to achieve lasting competitive advantages in their supply and service quality. It has been a success: stock placement and removal into and from the floor and high-rise storage systems. At their headquarters in Stolberg, Germany is now paper-free, the adherence to delivery dates is at over 99 percent - with confirmed overnight deliveries. A key role in process optimisation is played by the label as the data carrier.

Kerschgens have been active in the steel trade since 1876, initially as a small family operation. Today, the Kerschgens Group operates at six locations in Germany - Stolberg, Bitburg, Trier, Viersen, Neuss and Würselen. From here, steel, stainless steel, non ferrous metals and plastics are supplied to industrial and construction companies in the Rhineland and Saarland regions and neighbouring areas as well as across the border. With around 250 employees and a turnover of just under 80 million Euros the company has developed a good position with its extensive processing services, also for nationwide large projects.

RFID identification for international slab logistics

In some areas of steel logistics, barcode technology reaches its limits. While the processes are manageable and reliable in the warehouse, loading and shipping of steel slabs puts traceability to the test.

RFID labels enable automated matching of items with loading lists. Fixed antennas at loading points read out the item's ID and enable matching which makes loading and unloading markedly shorter. This reduces expensive demurrage charges for ships. The stations automatically capture anything that comes within reach of the antenna. The critical factor of this system is that a data carrier that adheres well to the scaly surface is required. GRAPHIPLAST® RFID labels ensure a secure bond and high mechanical resistance, so that the label can still be read, even if the going gets tough.
