OnMetal labels

Metallic environments, in particular, often pose great challenges for companies. These conditions frequently lead to functional restrictions of the RFID infrastructure. If transponders are attached to metallic products in the traditional way, the antenna may retune itself and, consequently, the label can no longer be read. However, in this difficult environment RFID can, in most cases, not be used with a standard solution that is suitable for all companies and all environments. And this is where we at S+P Samson come in!

Our highly resistant OnMetal labels for metallic environments offer maximum performance and, thanks to their flexible design they are extremely robust and made up of several layers of thin material combinations. In addition to their excellent performance values, users also appreciate that they can be easily printed and customised. This means that not only can they be attached to all types of metallic substrates, they also support the transport of any type of metal and were especially designed for the direct connectivity of RFID on metal. These characteristics ensure secure manufacturing processes and a permanent documentation of the supply chain processes in virtually any industrial environment. Another great advantage: the integration in your existing RFID system is a smooth and easy process and the labels enable the asset tracking of metal plates, metal pipes, raw metals and reusable metal goods and containers.

High-temperature tags

Thanks to the extreme temperature resistance of our high temperature tags they are ideally suited to RFID-based process optimisation in industry. To be able to withstand high temperatures suitable materials and constructions are required that provide permanent protection for the sensitive data carrier of the RFID system. We use special materials for the tags, facestock and the adhesive in combination with special and highly heat-resistant radio frequency transponders. This ensures that all information is retained in full quality during the entire manufacturing process, even in very challenging conditions and temperatures. During the cooling processes the transponder is exposed to temperatures well above 350°C. Not only does the transponder withstand the industrial soldering processes in machine construction, engine manufacture and the demanding steel industry, it also stores and transmits reliably and without any wear, while maintaining its shape, colour and functionality as well as the printed information at high temperatures. It goes without saying that we customise all of our labels for the many different process requirements of our customers along their individual value chains.

Sterilisation and washing processes

By the end of May 2025 all medical devices covered by the “Medical Device Regulation” (MDR) which are sold in the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland must be uniquely identifiable by a number sequence. And just because of this requirement alone locating and identifying instruments in the logistics cycle will be a great challenge in hospitals and in the medical sector in the future. Our innovative Clinic-ID transponders which are embedded in a silicone coating have a proven track record as a high-quality technology for improved hygiene, efficiency and productivity. This also applies to one of our favourites – container identification. Characteristics and functions of RFID labels and tags

We develop our smart RFID labels and tags individually for your needs. Whether it is used as a tag, adhesive label or combination label: the basic construction of the RFID unit is always the same.

 

How the system works

The technology basically consists of three components:

  • Transponder
  • Reader
  • Transmission and processing system (referred to as middleware)

The data on the RFID transponder is stored and read contactless and without any visual contact. The term “transponder”, when used in the context of RFID technology, and also referred to as RFID tag, is a construct of the terms “transmit” and “response”. The integrated transponder is equipped with an antenna for radio identification and a chip for data storage; the transmission of data between transponder and RFID reader is via electromagnetic waves. The data flow is then transferred to a server where the data is reprocessed so that it can be accessed and analysed by the corresponding IT systems.

Direct contact between the components is not essential as the radio waves can penetrate virtually any material within a range of up to 12 metres.

 

 

The middleware (software, hardware and the readers)

To enable your receiver to read and write to the transponder you need software. This software will determine which data is processed. It processes any changes to the data formats and also takes care of any re-sorting. By using smart filters the data volume can also be substantially reduced as duplicate records can be removed or missing parts can be logically completed. The receivers are connected to a PC, a controller or a smartphone. The number of receivers depends on how detailed the mapping of the process chain needs to be.

What is RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification)?(Radio-Frequency IDentification)?

RFID transponders have a memory which contains the fixed identity of the object and can be read an infinite number of times and encoded multiple times. On transponders with a read-write memory other information can also be stored (or the existing information can be adapted). The transponder is made up as follows: it consists of a microchip which acts as the memory, and a coupling element, the antenna. The memory enables the transmission of information via the object that was tagged (i.e. equipped with a chip), and the object also receives a uniquely identifiable number. Memory sizes currently range from a few bytes to several kilobytes.

Design

RFID transponders can be provided in virtually any shape, material, size and colour. The specific design depends on the application. There are two basic types of transponders – active and passive RFID transponders:

  • Passive transponders do not contain their own energy source. They obtain the required energy from the radio waves of the reader. Passive transponders are therefore smaller and cheaper to buy. Due to these design features passive transponders are much easier to recycle than active transponders.
  • Active transponders have their own battery which remains in standby mode until a signal is received from the reader. The advantage of active transponders is that they enable working with a longer range with less field energy (emanating from the reader). When a signal is received the information of the chip content is transmitted. The obtained information is routed directly to the computer-based software (middleware) for the exchange of data. The middleware immediately processes the information and maps it on a monitor, if applicable.

 

Encoding

The memory size of the chip also depends on the application. The memory is organised in different memory banks. Usually, a TID memory bank is selected if unique identification is required. It contains an immutable string that is unique worldwide or a codable EPC which can be freely designed with regard to its data content. The size of these memory banks is either 12 or 16 bytes. With the usual ASCII encoding, 12 or 16 characters will therefore be available to the user. If the EPC memory bank is encoded, a combination of prefix, suffix and ascending numbers can be used. In addition to simple storage there is also a range of other chip functionalities including read-only, encryption of the data content, cryptographic functionalities and many others. The individual specifications will vary with the application and the required security level.
